This exercise aims to demonstrate the application of PLAXIS 2D for the preliminary assessment of the stability and time-dependent deformation of salt rock in room and pillar mining operations. In salt mines featuring a long room and rib pillar layout, with panels separated by barrier pillars, a 2D plane strain model can be used to simplify the 3D problem and reduce computation time. In this exercise, a 2D plane strain model is created to simulate the cross-section of a single panel within the room and pillar layout.
