FAQs & Common/Known Issues of ODOT's Migration to Bentley's OpenX 2024 Platform of Products

Frequently Asked Questions and Common/Known Issues of ODOT’s Migration to Bentley’s OpenX 2024 Platform of Productions (OpenRoads Designer, OpenBridge Modeler, OpenGround, etc…)

Q1: How do I know if an OpenX product is a major or minor release and if there is a civil schema change?

A1: Please see Staying Current with OpenRoads Designer 02: Major and Minor Releases

Q2: Is there an OHDOTCEv02 workspace for the OpenRoads Designer 2024 civil schema?

A2: As of the publication of this page (April 14, 2025) ODOT has not updated any DGN Libraries to the ORD 2024 schema. The current workspace will work in ORD 10.12 and 2024. For more information, see Ohio DOT & Consultants - Overview of OHDOT's move to a new OpenX major version - Knowledge Portal

Q3: When will the OHDOTCEv02 workspace for the OpenRoads Designer 2024 civil schema be available?

A3: We wanted to give all organizations and users ample time to install ORD 2024 before any updates to the workspace were published. We’ll begin to update the workspace for the ORD 2024 schema in the coming weeks. However, an official publication date has not been established. For more information, see Ohio DOT & Consultants - Overview of OHDOT's move to a new OpenX major version - Knowledge Portal

Q4: When will the OpenBridge Modeler 2024 workspace be available?

A4: It’s anticipated that the OpenBridge Modeler will be published in the summer of 2025.

Q5: Will the use of OpenBridge Modeler be required for all projects?

A5: No, not at this time. A timeline for delivery of bridge models has not been established. However, use of OpenBridge Modeler will be encouraged by the Office of CADD & Mapping Services.

Q6: Why does the Place Label command no longer work?

A6: The MicroStation Place Label command was originally “re-worked” in OpenRoads Designer for use with civil/transportation labeling needs. In OpenX 2024 applications the Place Label tool was reset to match the functionality of the tool in MicroStation. OpenRoads Designer Help - Deprecations in 2024.

Civil Labeler was introduced several releases ago and should now be used for civil annotations/labeling.

Q7: Why am I receiving the “Unable to run command in a Sheet or Drawing Model” dialog when open a .dgn?

Graphical user interface, text, applicationAI-generated content may be incorrect.

A7: This dialog is being shown because the Feature Definition Toolbar is open (or was open when you last closed ORD) and you’re attempting to open a .dgn which is a Drawing model, Sheet model, or a .dgn where the file settings were last saved with the active model being a Drawing or Sheet model.

The Feature Definition Toolbar cannot be used in Sheet or Drawing Model. Selecting OK will open the .dgn and you can continue to work as usual. The Feature Definition Toolbar will be closed.

Bug #1403714 was filed by ODOT (with ORD 2023) in March 2024. In April 2025, Bentley has indicated this is working as designed noting "product stability" as the reason.

Q8: In my Dynamic Profile View Window, the datum elevations along the left side of the view are rounding to whole numbers when zooming in instead of increasing the accuracy to one or more decimal places like in previous versions.

A8: Unfortunately, this is a known bug/defect in OpenRoads Designer 2024 (24.00.00.205) which is fixed in OpenRoads Designer 2024 Update 1 (24.00.01.xx).

Update May 7, 2025:

As of May 2, 2025, Bentley discovered an issue with the 2024 Update 1 (24.00.01.62) release which can harm files and make them unstable. The 2024 Update 1 release has already been removed from Software Downloads. Bentley is now recommending not to use this update, as it affects both upgraded and new files created in 2024 Update 1. Please see Blog: OpenSite, OpenRoads, and OpenRail Designer 2024 Update 1

Q9: Is ODOT using OpenRoads Designer 2024 Update 1 Release (24.00.01.xx) internally?

A9: ODOT is currently using OpenRoads Designer 2024 (24.00.00.205), until we’re able move the entire Department to a new version, we may look to update some users as necessary for their job functions for bug fixes.

External users may migrate to OpenRoads Designer 2024 Update 1 Release (24.00.01.xx) if desired or needed. Consult with your company’s IT or CADD Manager(s).

A9: ODOT is currently using OpenRoads Designer 2024 (24.00.00.205). Based on the update below from Bentley, ODOT does not recommend moving to OpenRoads Designer 2024 Update 1 Release (24.00.01.xx) if your organization has already downloaded the installer.

Q10: Is there a civil schema change with OpenRoads Designer 2024 Update 1 Release (24.00.01.xx)?

A10: No. There is no civil schema change with OpenRoads Designer 2024 Update 1 Release (24.00.01.xx) and there should not be any compatibility issues with other users using OpenRoads Designer 2024 (24.00.00.205).

Q11: Why is my H:V ratio cross section slope annotation now adding the decimal trailing zero for whole number slope (i.e. 2.0:1, 3.0:1, etc.) when previously this was omitted (i.e. 2:1, 3:1, 4:1)?

TimelineAI-generated content may be incorrect.

DiagramAI-generated content may be incorrect.

A11: This is known issue that Bentley already has logged as a bug for the ratio annotation precision not being respected. It’s logged under Child Service Case 1642406. You’re encouraged to submit a support case to Bentley to be added to this defect/bug.

For the time being, ODOT recommends leaving as-is unless absolutely necessary to be altered.

As a workaround, you may be able to copy the XS Slope Text Favorite into your XS.dgn and change the Alternate Ratio Precision = 0. However, this will also force any slope annotation that is not a whole number to round (i.e. 2.5:1) to the nearest whole number (i.e. 3:1).

Graphical user interfaceAI-generated content may be incorrect.

Q12: Why are my Profile Named Boundary Settings (highlighted below) not being set correctly with using Drawing Seeds “Plan-Pro – PROFILE 20 Scale” or “Plan-Pro – PROFILE 50 Scale” or when changing from one Drawing Seed to another?

A12: This appears to be an issue in ORD 2024, although some users have also experienced this in ORD 10.12. ODOT is currently investigating the problem.

These are the settings as defined in the Drawing Seeds that will need to be changed and/or confirmed by the user when creating the named boundaries.
