Problem

When opening a files in MicroStation they are Read Only and cannot be edited.

Solution

There maybe multiple reasons for files being Read Only when opened in MicroStation, check the following.

To check this open Windows Explorer at the location of the files(s). right click on the file and Select Properties.

In the Properties dialog select the ‘Security’ Tab

Select your Group or Name and check your Permissions and that ‘Allow’ is ticked against appropriate options

If Permission is set to ‘Deny’ select ‘Edit’ to change. (You may need your IT administrators assistance to check/change your permissions

Or use the CMD commands ‘attrib’ and ‘icacls’ to check the settings for the file(s) and Parent directories

Check for the presence of the Command Line switch ‘-R’ on the icon used to launch MicroStation. This switch instructs MicroStation to open file as Read Only

Check the Configuration Variable ‘MS_READONLY’ is not defined within your Custom Configuration or your Personal User Configuration File (personal.ucf)

Please seek assistance from your CAD administrator if changes to Custom Configuration is required.
