Export from DGN to FBX Generates a 0kb File

Question

When trying to export DGN files to an FBX format, the export process indicates success in the message center; however, the exported .fbx file is empty (showing as 0kb in size). The following troubleshooting steps were attempted:

  • Using different workspaces and different versions of ORD
  • Merging 3D references to be "live" in the DGN file
  • Moving all 3D data close to the file origin (0,0,0)
  • Drawing live elements in the file (geometry, corridors, linear templates, terrains)
  • Changing the view attributes to be smooth, illustration, etc.

Answer

To solve this issue, first of all, check the folder location where you are trying to save the exported FBX file. Ensure that this folder is not set up to sync with OneDrive. Here are the steps to resolve the issue:

  1. Identify the Folder Location: Verify the folder on your local computer where you are attempting to save the FBX file.
  2. Check OneDrive Sync: Ensure that the folder is not syncing with OneDrive. OneDrive can interfere with the export process by creating a placeholder .fbx file (0kb size) and preventing the merging or replacing of files.
  3. Change the Save Location: Target a folder that is NOT synced with OneDrive, such as a directory under C/USER/....
  4. Retry the Export: Perform the export process again, ensuring the new folder location is used.

By following these steps, the export should work perfectly fine on all computers.
