Section Groups

OpenGround contains special Groups (tables) for managing and generating Quick Section reports.

The main purpose of these Groups is to save settings, such as from the Section Production and Section Tools ribbons, so that Quick Sections can be easily re-generated later.

It's also possible to add custom Headers to these Groups to store custom settings and information for your Quick Section reports.

These Groups can be found within the Sections folder in the Project Explorer:

Table of Contents

Section Lines

Section Lines are the baselines (alignments) along which a Quick Section is generated.

The coordinates and properties of Sections Lines can be stored and managed within the Section Lines Group, so that Section Lines can easily be re-used later.

The Headers within the Section Line Group correspond with the settings available in the Section Production ribbon group within OpenGround Professional's Mapping interface (Mapping>Open Map).

Section Details

Along a Section Line, you can generate any number of Quick Section reports, such as using different Horizontal/Vertical Scales, Templates, or Paper Sizes.

The settings for these reports can be saved to the Section Details Group, so that the Quick Sections can be easily re-generated at a later time.

The Headers within the Section Details Group correspond with the settings available in the Section Tools ribbon. (With the exception that the Select Locations button selections are saved to Section Locations instead of Section Details - see below).

Each record in the Section Details Group corresponds with a Quick Section report that you may want to re-generate later.

The Section Details Group is a “child” of the Section Lines Group. In other words, each Section Details record (Section) must belong to a Section Line.

Section Locations

The Section Locations Group is used to manage the appearance of specific Locations on a Quick Section report.

Specifically, you can Exclude (hide) Locations and offset Locations from within the Section Locations Group.

The Section Locations Group is a "child" of the Section Details Group. In other words, you enter a Section Line and Section Name, and then can control the appearance of Locations specifically for that Section:

Note that the Section Locations Group does not automatically list every Location that will appear on the Section. It will only list Locations that are added, such as to hide or offset that Location.

Exclude Locations

Locations can be hidden on the map by setting the Exclude header to Yes for the desired Location ID. For example, here BH8 and BH9 overlap:

We can add BH9 to the Excluded Locations list using the Location Selection tool and save this to Section Locations:

BH9 is then hidden when the Quick Section is regenerated. Additionally, the record for BH9 to be Excluded can be seen in the Section Locations Grid:

Offset Locations

Location Strips can be horizontally offset by adding a record for that Location ID and entering a Horizontal Offset.

The Horizontal Offset is in millimeters on the paper space. A negative offset will shift the Strip to the left and a positive offset to the right.

In the example above for Exclude Locations, BH8 and BH9 overlapped.

Here we can offset BH8 7 mm left and BH9 7 mm right to resolve the conflict:

Offset Locations can be added by editing the Grid directly (see below).

Note - additional features will soon be available in Template Studio, such as to include leader lines to point back to the actual Location position.

Additional Information

If a Location exists in the Section Locations Group, but is not relevant to that Section, it will be ignored when the Section is generated.

This can occur if the Location is no longer in the Buffer and Location Group for that Section. This can happen for a number of reasons, such as if the Location coordinates or Section Line coordinates are updated, the Buffer or Location Group is changed, or just due to user error.

Editing Section Groups

From the Ribbons

As described above, the Section Groups mostly store settings from the Section Production and Section Tools ribbons. It is possible to save settings from the ribbons to add or update records in the corresponding Section Group.

For example, it's possible to Draw and Save a Section Line from the Map Tools>Section Production ribbon group.

When a Section Line is Saved, it is saved to the Section Line Group using the specified Name, Coordinates, and other properties such as the Buffer and Initial Chainage. If a new Name is used, a new record is added to the Section Line Group. If an existing Name is used, the properties for the existing Section Line are updated.

It's also possible to select a Section Line on the Map, which will recall it's settings within the Section Production ribbon group, allowing you to update and re-Save the Section Line properties. (Note – It isn’t currently possible to edit the Color of a Section Line directly from the Section Lines Group so you must use this method to update and re-Save the line Color.)

Note – There is currently a known-issue where if you add a new Section Line directly in the Section Lines grid, it will not appear on the Map immediately, even when you Refresh the Map. You will need to close and re-open the Map. You will then be able to see the new Section Line in the Map Legend Explorer, where you can turn it on so that it appears on the Map.

Similar is possible for the Section Tools ribbon where the ribbon settings can be saved to the Section Details Group using the Save Details button:

And similar is also possible for the Select Locations button where the selection can be saved to the Section Locations Group:

From the Grid

It is also possible to add and edit records directly in the data Grids for the Section Groups.

This is done with the normal workflow of using the Add/Edit Data button in the Grid Tools ribbon to make the grid editable.

This may be more efficient in some scenarios than updating settings through the ribbon, such as if you needed to update settings for a number of Sections in the Section Details Group.

Grid Tools

When working in the Section Groups, the Grid Tools ribbon contains the Section Production ribbon group with additional tools.

Quick Section (Generating a Quick Section)

A Quick Section can be generated directly from the Section Lines Group using the Grid Tools>Quick Section button.

When a Quick Section is generated from a Section Group, the "Section Line / Section Details Name" will be shown in the Grid tab label. For example:

Coordinates

It is possible to add and edit Section Line Coordinates directly from the Section Groups.

This is done using the Coordinates button in the Grid Tools>Section Production ribbon group.

Adding Custom Headers

It is possible to add custom Headers to Section Groups in a similar manner to adding any other Header (field).

This can be done in System>Configuration Packs>Manage Model by Edit-ing the desired Section Group and using the Add header button:

Referencing Section Groups & Headers in Quick Section Templates

It is possible to reference Section Groups and Headers in Expressions within Quick Section templates.

For more information, please see the Referencing Section Groups & Headers topic within this article.

CSV Import/Export

CSV import/export using Data>Import Data or Data>Export Data is not currently supported for Section Groups.

However, data can be exported using Grid Tools>CSV Export.
