An adequate and effective monitoring of the DMA (or Zones) performance is essential to keep the real losses levels low or even effectively reduce those. To accomplish this, operational monitoring activities - such as daily DMA flow monitoring and monthly water audit assessment - play an important role.
To make those activities more effective, WaterSight uses a powerful algorithm (based on statistical analysis and machine learning) to gap fill data for the zones whenever at least one of the sensor that belongs to the final zone balance fails (no data, flat reading, big spikes due to wrong data, etc). These estimations are based on the sensor pattern values.
Estimated zone flows will be displayed in the zone graphs (represented with empty circles) and the estimated values will be used in all consequent calculations of water balances and other zone KPI.
By default Zone Gap Filling functionality is off, this means that if one of the sensor that belongs to the zone fails and starts to report no data, the zone will also report no data. Or if one of the sensors that belongs to the zone starts to report wrong data, the zone will also start to report wrong data. To activate zone gap filling go to Administration, and edit each zone. On the side panel, make sure to turn the option "Use Gap Filling" set to yes.
After this change is made, automatically zones data will be estimated for the specific periods where:
Estimated data is only displayed at the zone level (and not at the sensor level) and will be represented in the zone graphs with empty white circles, allowing the user to continue to have access to zone flows, even if estimated, see example below.
The Zone Water Balances (System Input volumes) will also be calculated using the zone flow estimations for the periods where the sensors failed.
Zone Time Series
If events at the sensor level are already been generated every time the sensor fails, the user just needs to make sure he updates the category to meter failure so that those periods are automatically estimated when calculating the final zone flow.
The user can also manually force the zone flow to be estimated for some specific periods in case he is aware that during those periods the sensors were reporting wrong values. In that case the user just needs to create a manual event from the sensor graph, by clicking in the create event button () located at the top of the graph, and categorize it as meter failure.
Water Balance - System input volume
The calculation of the System Input volume for the zones will ignore the periods where meter failure events were registered at the sensor level or zone level. For those periods, estimated data will instead be considered (based on the zone pattern). More information can be found here, Water Balance Calculation.
