Problem:
I have created a new Discipline Group on the Catalog Editor. But I am not able to find the corresponding changes except on the user interface. Where do I find that?
Solution:
- Once a new Discipline Group has been created on the Catalog Editor, it can be explored easily from the Catalog Editor itself on OBD user interface. To open the Catalog Editor,
Go to File > Dataset Tools > Catalog Editor

- Then the new Discipline Group can be accessed from there alongside all the other existing Discipline Groups.

- The addition of this new Discipline Group can be seen to be reflected in C:\ProgramData\Bentley\OpenBuildings 2023\Configuration\Datasets\Dataset_NM\DataGroupSystem\CatalogTypeGroups.xml.
- If you are using OBD CNNECT Edition instead of OBD 2023, then in the folder path in place of OpenBuildings 2023, it will be located under OpenBuildings CONNECT Edition folder. Also, the Dataset name will be according to whatever Dataset is being used while creating the Discipline Group. In this case, Dataset_NM had been chosen and that's why its name is being reflected on the folder path.
If the active Dataset is stored within a custom configuration, the changes will be saved to that, not to the local copy.
- You can open the CatalogTypeGroups.xml file using any text editor ( e.g. Notepad, Notepad ++ etc.) and scroll through it. The new Discipline Group name along with the Catalog Types stored under it can be found (generally at the bottom of the file). Any sub-groups under that Discipline Group should also be visible there.

- From the Catalog Editor, the Catalog Types and Catalog Items created under the new groups or sub-groups can then be stored at Organization, WorkSpace or WorkSet levels as usual according to the requirements.
Always save (when possible) your changes to a separate XML file from those delivered by Bentley Systems. This makes it a lot easier to carry your custom content forward when the Datasets are updated. CatalogTypeGroups.xml is one of the exceptions where we don't have the facility to save to a separate file.
