How to model Concrete / Metal Rest Blocks pipe supports using AutoPIPE?
This type of support primarily provides resistance to vertically downward movement. It also provide a minor amount of resistance to movement in the lateral direction. However, with enough lateral force the pipe would be able to pop out of the cradle/depression and would be free to continue moving in lateral direction.
Suggest modeling this support using an AutoPIPE V-stop or Incline support type. Recommend gap settings, Gap Down = 0.00 and Gap up = 100 in / 254 mm. Note, whatever friction value entered on the support dialog will be applied to both the lateral and longitudinal movement.
After the analysis, review the lateral displacement at the support location to see how much movement occurs. One may need to reconsider one of the following approaches:
Model as a Gide
Modeling the support as a Guide with Left, right, and down gaps settings = 0.00, with up gap same as before. When considering a Guide, again look at the analysis results to confirm that the lateral support force are appropriate to avoid the pipe from popping out of the support's cradle/depression.
Model as a pair of perpendicular incline supports
One major advantage of modeling 2 Incline supports perpendicular to one another is being able to set individual gaps and stiffness for the Horizontal / Vertical support. Again, enter gaps, friction, and Stiffness values as need for each support. Again look at the analysis results to confirm that the lateral support force are appropriate to avoid the pipe from popping out of the support's cradle/depression.
