What is the Bentley DGN Preview Handler?

The Bentley DGN Preview Handler allows you to see the contents of a DGN file without opening the file inside MicroStation or another Bentley application.
It is installed via DgnPreviewHandler.msi when MicroStation is installed.

 

How can the Bentley DGN Preview Handler be accessed?

In current versions of Windows OS, the Bentley DGN Preview Handler supports a preview pane that is accessible from a drop-down menu in Windows File Explorer.

 

 

 

 

This feature is also available within Microsoft Outlook. If a .dgn file is attached to an email, then click on the attachment within Microsoft Outlook. You may be prompted with a warning message to only preview files from a trustworthy source. Click on "Preview File" to view the preview. These warning messages can be disabled by toggling off the setting "Always warn before previewing this type of file"

 

The following types of items cannot be viewed in the preview pane:

- Point Clouds

- Raster attachments

- Protected DGN files

- Textures

- Geocoordinated references having a different datum

 

A configuration is needed to resolve references, therefore, only relative paths are resolved.
