Ad-Hoc Model Review to Bentley Infrastructure Cloud Design Review

This document describes the recommended best practices for adopting and implementing Bentley Infrastructure Cloud Design Review in place of the deprecated Ad-Hoc model product.  It covers the following topics:

Creating Projects

Project creation is very similar between the two systems.  The key difference is that Infrastructure Cloud displays and allows the creation of construction build projects in addition to design projects.

Adding Team Members

Adding project team members is virtually identical in Infrastructure Cloud.

Custom Roles and Permissions

Custom roles and permissions are similar, however custom roles are tied to specific access entitlements using Infrastructure Cloud.

Creating iModels

iModel creation is far more robust and complete in Infrastructure Cloud but it does require a bit more initial setup.  With Ad-Hoc, iModels are created “on-the-fly” by right clicking a local CAD file and selecting “create iModel”.  This limits iModels to creation of single models with no reference or managed workspace support, and no connection to ProjectWise.  Infrastructure Cloud iModel creation using the following workflow below.  For more detail on each of these steps, please visit:

https://bentleysystems.service-now.com/community?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0036107

1. Create an iModel container

2. Add file to the iModel.  Files can be:

  • ProjectWise files
  • ProjectWise saved searches
  • Local CAD files stored on BIC file share

3. Enter connection data if necessary (geo-coordinate system, connector type)

4. Perform the synchronization.  This can be initiated manually or by schedule

Performing Design Reviews

Infrastructure Cloud allows full issues-driven reviews complete with 3D markups, sheet integration, attachments, round-trip CAD integration and updating, comments, and complete audit trails and traceability.  Instead of attaching comments, users create form-based issues on the iModel.  Issue forms become a permanent record of the design review iModel and provide a rich foundation capturing all comments, interactions, markups, and attachments.  For more information on Infrastructure Cloud issues resolution, please visit:

Updating iModels

Ad-Hoc provides no ability to update iModels.  If the source CAD data changes, it requires the creation of a new iModel and a new session to add comments.  With Infrastructure Cloud, iModels can be updated by simply re-syncing the iModel connection.  Changes to the iModel are tracked and can be compared using version compare to understand how models have changed across updates.  For more information on updating iModels.
