Vertical Clearance

Overview

This tool provides a means to measure vertical clearance.  Optimally for a bridge over a roadway, but the tool can be used for other means.

Finding the command

In the Civil Frontstage, open the left widget panel and select the Civil Design Validation and Analysis tab.

After selecting the Civil Validation and Analysis widget, click the drop-down menu to access the Vertical Clearance tool.

Add New Vertical Clearance

Select the “Add new vertical clearance” button from the palette.

The form then changes to allow for a name, a minimum clearance measurement, and two panels which represent the “Travel way element(s)” and the “Overhead element(s)”.

Select anywhere in the “Travel way element(s)” pane.  This will change the mode to identify selected objects.  Proceed to select all of the elements (meshes) which the tool should use.to validate.  In this example there were three (3) meshes selected, indicated by the yellow arrows.  To end the selection of travel way elements, select the blue button on the side of the travel way panel (red arrow).

This will now change the mode to identify the overhead objects.  (Note the objects selected will vary based upon the iModel schema and provenance, in some cases the tool will be able to detect an entire bridge superstructure from a single selection.  In other cases, the user will need to select the mesh objects to use.)

When finished selecting the Overhead element(s), select the blue button on the side of the panel.  This will highlight the Run button.

Hit Run and the clearance envelope will be computed.  If it is green then the minimum clearance is met, otherwise the envelope will be red.

For an refined cross section visual, select the measurement in the view and a cross section glyph appears , select the glyph to view the cross section.
