Onboarding Plan Session Three - Adding grids/adding fields

Adding grids/adding fields

You should always be careful when adding new fields. Before adding a field it is advisable to check if a field already exists in OpenGround to cover that data. The risk of not checking is not being able to use standard components or struggling to communicate your data out to transfer formats.

There are several reasons you would need to add a group or a field:

With all this said the OpenGround team would like to know if you are adding whole groups as we like to understand how user are using OpenGround to make sure the components we make still work as needed.

Adding Fields

The most common part of adding to the data model will be adding a field to a group/table. To do this you will need to go to the config pack and manage model (see the last session to know how to get here).

You can then follow this guide on how to add the field

Adding Group/Tables

Adding a completely new table is not advisable unless you are very sure the data shouldn't be in another table. To do this you will need to go to the config pack and Manage model.

You can then follow this guide on how to add a table.

Once you have added the table you will need to add the fields for that new table.

Top tip: you will need to think about the Key fields required to keep the data valid before starting to add the fields.

Changing the Order of a Grid in Professional

Changing the order of the grid you see when you load the data in Professional is a useful way to make the important data a focal point.

You can do this in two ways. One way is when you first set up the grid you can assign a display order number to the field which runs from 0 left to and in increasing values (=>1) to the right.

This isn't the most effective way to do it but it can be useful if you are adding additional fields to a Group/Table.

Top Tip: the number can be a decimal number this means you can use 9.1 if you want to put something just to the right of the final depth above.

Changing the Grid View

Changing the Grid view means you can update the view you have of the Group/Table. This is done from the config pack with the Manage Grids Button when you select a Group/Table after selecting the Manage Model icon.

You can update this by following this guide
