Unit Conversion

OpenGround supports unit conversion for various workflows. Please see the topics below for more information.

Table of Contents

Secondary Units

Each header in OpenGround can have a Unit defined for it (also referred to as the 'Primary Unit'). This is the unit in which data is stored and reported, such as on Logs and Quick Sections.

Secondary Units can also be defined, which allow for data to be entered in a different unit and automatically converted to the Primary Unit.

For example, in Canada, it is common to collect drilling data in imperial units (feet) but report it in metric, in which case the OpenGround configuration can be set up with metric Primary Units and imperial Secondary Units.

Defining Primary & Secondary Units

Both Primary & Secondary Units can be defined by going to System>Configuration Packs>Manage Model in OpenGround Professional and selecting the desired Group and Header to Edit. Secondary Units can only be assigned for headers with a 'Decimal' Data Type, and the Secondary Unit will be restricted to the same Unit Group as the Primary Unit.

Entering data with Secondary Units

Data can be viewed and entered using Secondary Units.

For example, in OpenGround Professional, data will be shown in the Primary Unit by default:

If you select Grid Tools>Secondary Units, the data will be shown in Secondary Units.

You can then select Grid Tools>Add/Edit Data. Any data entered with Secondary Units activated will be automatically converted to Primary Units.

Other applications, such as the Data Entry module, also have similar capabilities to view and edit data using Secondary Units.

Data Import

Automatic unit conversion is supported when importing certain File Formats. Please see the sections below for more information.

AGS

Unit conversion is supported during AGS file import. If the UNIT defined in the AGS file is different from the Unit (Primary Unit) for the destination header in OpenGround, the value will be automatically converted to the Primary Unit.

The AGS UNIT must be in the same Unit Group as the Unit for the destination header (for example, both must be units of Length) or errors will be encountered during the import process with a message similar to below.

CSV

Unit conversion is also supported during CSV file import. For unit conversion to be performed, the CSV files must be packaged within a .zip file and there must be a UnitMapping.csv included. Unit conversion is only performed for headers with a 'Decimal' Data Type.

UnitMapping.csv lists the units for each field within the CSV files.

If you export a file to CSV using Data>Export Data, it will automatically include the UnitMapping.csv.

Note that if you export a file to CSV using Grid Tools>CSV Export, this does not generate UnitMapping.csv and instead only generates a single CSV file for the active grid.

As with AGS import, the source unit within UnitMapping.csv and destination Unit for the OpenGround header must be in the same Unit Group or errors will be encountered during the import process.

Other File Formats

Automatic unit conversion is not supported for other File Formats, such as during gINT import. However, unit conversions can be defined within the Import Mapping file if necessary. Please see this article for more information.

Unit Conversion in OpenGround Data Collector

Unit conversion is supported when using the OpenGround Data Collector mobile field application. For more information, please see this article.

Configuration Pack Considerations

While unit conversion is supported within OpenGround, in general, data is managed and reported using Primary Units. If you need to report data in different units than your current configuration pack utilizes, you will likely need a different configuration pack that uses the desired units.

We currently have standard configurations packs that support different units. For example, the North America Metric configuration pack is essentially the same as the US configuration pack, except the US configuration uses imperial units.

If you have a highly customized configuration pack that you would like to convert to use different units, please contact support for further assistance.
