- Export to Google Earth, polygon issues

When you use the Export to Google Earth (KLM file) command in MicroStation, it is assumed that all of the features and attributes will be represented in the KML file as they appear in the DGN File. But there are situations and conditions (and settings) that can affect how the output appears. For example, polygons and line strings that are complex in MicroStation may not convert as-shown. In cases like this, you will need to rearrange or alter the input to ensure the output is satisfactory.

Notice the complexity of these polygons in figure 1. They contain thousands of vertices, resulting in MicroStation Complex Shape elements.

Use the Export to Google Earth (KML file) command to create the output.

Here is an initial result as-exported to Google Earth:

Notice the triangulation between the vertices of the Complex Shapes. This is not the intended output.

To remedy the situation, use the Drop command in MicroStation, then the Create Region command to reproduce the polygon.

The newly-exported results should match the input. The results are shown here in Google Earth:

MicroStation’s Google Earth Tools Settings are available to adjust the output.

Use the General, 3D, and Captured Geometry tabs to suit your needs.
