Question:
How to connect pressure vessel head directly to body flange in AutoPIPE Vessel?

Answer:
As shown in the image above, attempting to directly attach the body flange to the head would lead to an
unrealistic configuration. Clearly the head is NOT properly attached to the flange. In order to correctly attach the
head to the flange follow the steps below:
- It is required to attach the torispherical head directly to the body flange, there has to be a straight flange
portion of the head = 70 mm:
- Double click the flange to which the head needs to be connected and add the flange thicknesses f and b as
shown below
- Click OK, then click on the flange and right click and select Insert copy
- When the Component Properties dialog box opens, select “Shell” from the Identification Menu, select
“After Selection”, change Designation to “shell connection” (eg.) and enter the dimension obtained in
Step 1 (eg. 115).
- Click OK, then click on Strength Calculation icon and run code calculations.
- Once the calculation is complete click on Geometry at the bottom left and observe that the shell
connection length is -80, our intent is to make it 0 (ie. The shell connection will be a phantom shell or a
pseudo shell and will actually not exist).
- Go back to main window and double click the shell to open its properties dialog box. Add 80 to previous
length of shell (ie. 115) to make the new length 115+80=195, basically adjust the shell so that the final
length of shell = 0.
- Click OK and recalculate and then observe under Geometry section that the length of the shell course is
now equal to 0. Length of the shell = 0 means the shell is a dummy shell now.
- By now the head is successfully connected to the flange, the 3D sketch appears correct, check view to
verify the same.
- Also to verify completely, generate the 2D drawing and check the drawing which clearly shows the head
straight portion welded directly to the flange.
