Problem:
How are Allowable Stresses (nominal stresses) calculated for a material in AutoPIPE Vessel?
Solution:
AutoPIPE Vessel calculates allowable stresses (nominal stresses) according to the requirements of various design codes. The allowable stress can be manually changed using user-defined values of Safety Factors.
For details on how to input a user-defined material factor of safety to modify the allowable stress, refer to KB article [KB0031424].
EN 13445-3:
- Allowable stresses are calculated as per EN 13445-3, Clause 6.
- Table 6-1 provides a summary of allowable stress calculations, See the snapshot of Table 6-1 below for reference:
Example 1:
Material: SA516 Gr 60 (Carbon Steel, A = 0%)

- Rp0.2: 195 MPa
- Rm: 414 Mpa
- As per Clause 6.2: As per clause 6.2 , fd = min (Rp0.2/1.5 ,Rm/2.4) = min (130, 172.5) = 130 Mpa

Material: A182 Gr F316L (Stainless Steel, A = 28%)

- As per Clause 6.4: fd = Rp1.0/1.5 = 172/1.5 = 114.67 Mpa
