Problem
In Ship Impact analysis, is there an option to stop the collapse program and list the results when the member dent depth limit is reached?
Solution
The Collapse Advanced doesn't have an option to stop if the dent exceeds the limit.
- If the dent depth reaches the limit, the energy absorbed by the member dent no longer increases and remains the same for the rest of the analysis. The dent depth also remains the same.
- Also, the Collapse Advanced Listing file marks the load step where the dent limit has been reached - see the screenshot below:

Ellinas and Furnes' approaches to calculating member and dent energies are empirical methods in lieu of the more advanced finite element modeling (like meshing the member using plate elements).
During the design of the collapse program, and mainly because of the empirical nature of those approaches, the collapse analysis could continue if a limit has been reached, report the limiting factor in the listing file (as shown in this analysis), and let the SACS users interpret the remainder of the results after such limit has been reached.
