Applies To
 Product:AutoPIPE
First Affected Version:09.06.01
 Found in Version:10.00.00
Fixed and Released in Version:10.01.00.08
 Area: Library
 Severity: Critical
 Backlog Issue Number:344919

Problem Description

Base material for SA508-1A material specification is incorrectly set as Low Alloy Steel instead of carbon steel

Reason

Base material for SA508-1A material specification is incorrectly set as Low Alloy Steel (GROUP-1-A) instead of carbon steel (GROUP-1-LC). ASME BPV Section II Part D provides the nominal composition as carbon steel for specification SA-508 grade 1A. Using Low Alloy Steel material properties instead of carbon steel material properties may result in incorrect calculated stress and fatigue allowable stress values. The calculated stress values may be lower than the actual stress values, and the calculated fatigue allowable stress values may be higher than the actual allowable stress values, leading to un-conservative results.

To illustrate the defect the following scenario can be considered:

Step 1: Create a new ASME NB 2013 edition model (Material library is set to ASME2013)

Step 2: Create a new pipe identifier, and on the Pipe Properties dialog, set Pipe Material to SA508-1A

Note that the Composition is set to Low Alloy Steel instead of Carbon Steel. When the program uses material composition of Low allow steel as the associated material properties, the calculated stress values and allowable stress values are incorrect.

The following considerations are provided to assist in your evaluation of the potential impact of this defect on the results:

1. Evaluate whether this defect has affected any existing models by considering the criteria below:

a. Was the piping code selected for the model ASME NB, NC or ND (any edition)?
b. Was the material library selected for the piping code ASME2010 or ASME2013?
c. Was there a pipe ID in the model with material specification set as SA508-1A?

A 'No' to one or more of the above criteria means that this defect does not affect the model’s results. No further consideration for this model is necessary.

Solution

Affected material libraries shall be updated to set the base material for SA508-1A material specification as carbon steel (GROUP-1-LC). Impacted pipe properties and temperature dependent properties for the impacted points in the model shall also be updated with the correct properties.

Additionally, to assist in the screening of the models created in previous program versions for any potential impact by this defect, the program shall automatically examine the model database after opening the model and generate a report (model name + "_D344919.TXT") listing the Pipe IDs in the model with material specification set as SA508-1A. The program shall display the following confirmation message:

“Stress and allowable stress values for points with materials specification set as SA508-1A may be incorrectly calculated due to a previous program defect #344919. Would you like to review the evaluation report?”

Avoidance

Set the affected pipe IDs material to NS and manually update the affected material properties and composition to correct values.

For defining new pipe IDs with affected material specification – select the affected material specification and press OK on pipe properties dialog. This will update all material properties using the affected material specification properties including temperature dependent properties for the Pressure and Temperature dialog. Modify the pipe ID and set the material to NS and manually update the affected material properties and composition to correct values.
