ASME VIII divisions 1 and 2, as well as ASME III Appendix XI requires the consideration of corrosion when designing flanges,
as mentioned in sections 2-1(b), 4.16.2.3, and XI-1121, respectively. AutoPIPE does not provide the capability to assign a
corrosion allowance to these flanges, which can cause unconservative stress and moment results.
To illustrate this defect, the following scenario can be considered:
Step 1: Create a new B31.1 2018 model
Step 2: Insert a new segment and a new pipe ID named ‘PIPECOR’. Set the nominal diameter to 10 inches, the schedule to
STD, and the corrosion allowance to 0.050 inches. Set the material to A53-A. Leave all other fields as default and accept the
pipe properties dialog.
Step 3: In the Operating Pressure & Temperature dialog, set the pressure to 100psi. Accept all other defaults
Step 4: Insert an anchor at A00
Step 5: Insert a run 5’ in the X direction from A00 named A01
Step 6: Insert a WELDNECK flange at A01 and set the pressure rating to 400. Run analysis
Step 7: Open the Flange Check dialog (Result > Flange > Flange Check). Navigate to the Flange tab and set the Flange Material
to SA/AS 1548-7-430A
Step 8: Navigate to the Analysis tab. Check the analysis box of the flange and run analysis. Generate output report
Since the Flange Check does not consider corrosion, some stresses are unconservative. For example, the internal pressure
due to Longitudinal Hub Stress in section 3.1 reports 1.400 ksi, however with a 0.050 inch corrosion, the stress should be
1.435 ksi.
The following considerations are provided to assist in your evaluation of the potential impact of this defect on the results:
Evaluate whether this defect has affected any existing models by considering the criteria below:
1. Was the model created in AutoPIPE 9.4.0 or later?
2. Does the model contain a WELDNECK or SLIP-ON flange?
3. Does the flange in step 2 exist on a pipe where the corrosion of the pipe is non-zero?
4. Is the flange set to run either ASME VIII-1, ASME VIII-2, or ASME III Appendix XI analysis?
A 'No' to one or more of the above criteria means that this defect does not affect the model’s results.
There is no known workaround.
AutoPIPE shall introduce a Use Pipe Corrosion checkbox in the Flange tab of the Flange Check dialog. When checked, flange
analysis shall use the pipe corrosion to corrode the flange. This corrosion shall affect the bore, small end hub and large end
hub thickness dimensions of the flange. This box shall only be available for SLIP-ON and WELDNECK for ASME VIII-1, ASME
VIII-2 and ASME III Appendix XI analysis methods. Additionally, a new input listing line shall be added to the flange check
report that displays the corrosion dimension used when calculating the stresses and moments of each flange.
When opening older models in the new version, all flanges capable of considering corrosion shall have the Use Pipe
Corrosion box checked by default. The program shall display the following confirmation message
The program shall display the following confirmation message:
“AutoPIPE flange check does not consider corrosion due to previous
program defect #1054789. Would you like to review evaluation report?”
The contents of the critical error report shall be like the following sample critical error report:

---------------------------------
ASME VIII-1, ASME VIII-2, and ASME III Appendix XI flanges do not
consider corrosion allowance due to a previous program defect
#1054789. Please refer to the published defect report for more
details, mitigation conditions and instructions. To assist in the
screening of this model for any potential impact by this defect,
program has examined the model database and has found that the Flange
Check stresses for the flanges reported below should be re-computed
using this program version.
After saving this model or running any analysis in this version or
later commercial release versions, this screening will no longer be
performed.
