How to split up or separate objects/elements (such as solids) into individual files

Background

If, for example, a large model has a number of 3D elements or objects and it is desired to separate some of these components by exporting them to new files, how can this be done?

Steps to Accomplish

One option to look at using to split the large model is to use the File Fence command/tool. To do this;

  1. Open the Fence Toolbox from Tools > Toolboxes > Fence
  2. In these settings, set the Fence Type to Element and Fence Mode to Overlap
  3. Place a Fence around the elements you wish to export to the new file
  4. Return to the Fence Toolbox and select the Copy/Move Fence Contents to File tool
  5. Choose an Output file name, choose the Processing Mode (Move or Copy)
  6. Click in the view to Export the element to the new file
  7. Open the new file to check if it exported as desired (or enable the 'Switch to generated file' option)
