Problem

Sometimes when using SELECTserver, a user will start to get a message while launching MicroStation. "A license for this product could not be found." This means that MicroStation is not finding the local msv8.lic file.

This can be quite puzzling, especially when the local license file has been working.

Solution

1. Confirm that the msv8.lic file is present in the Program Files\Bentley\Program\Licensing directory. Make sure it is named correctly and has no "txt" extension.

2. Launch MicroStation, after the error message appears, click to take the 15 minute tryout. Open a file and go to Workspace>Configuration.
Check the MS_USERLICENSE variable to confirm that it points to the right location and file name.

3. Check the lmdebug.log, found in the Bentley\Program\MicroStation\Temp directory. It will give a detailed message, usually like this: loadIntoList: unable to open: C:\ProgramFiles\Bentley\Program\Licensing\msv8.lic

This will confirm that the program is in fact looking in the right place for the license. If it gives some other path, check for en
vironment variables that might be overwriting the program level variables.

4. When all else fails, delete and recreate the msv 8.lic file from scratch. Experience has shown that even when this file looks OK, it can still be the cause of the problem.

Open "Notepad" and type in the following statement:

SERVER=servername

..where "servername" is the actual name of the server. Note that the word "SERVER" is in all caps and that no spaces appear in the statement.

Go to File>Save As
Browse to ....Bentley\Program\Licensing
Change file types to "all files"
Type in the file name using quotes. "msv8.lic" - This will prevent
Notepad from putting a "txt" extension on the file.

5. Once the new local license file is in place, launch MicroStation again.
