Error or Warning Message

This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

How to Avoid

Through Windows Explorer or My Computer navigate to the ...\Bentley\Program\Install directory.

1. Double-click on redistSysFiles.exe
2. Click Next
3. Select the Remove option
4. Click the Remove button
5. Click the Finish button
Make sure the following files are not on your machine. If they are, delete them.

%windir%\system32\msxml4.dll
%windir% \system32\msxml4a.dll
%windir%\system32\msxml4r.dll

Then double-click the redistSysFiles.exe again to reinstall.
MicroStation should then start.

=======================
Some additional information:

1. Why didn't we install it in the first place?

If you used the V8 installer to put MicroStation on your current OS the RedistSysfiles was already installed. An error message appears if it doesn't complete successfully.

a) If, however, you don't use Bentley's installer, these files won't be installed.
b) Also, if you install V8, then upgrade from some older Operating System to XP -- not to anything else -- then it will have never run in Microsoft's special XP mode.

2. What is it installing?

Microsoft redistributable system files (dll's). Though the outer shell is written by Bentley, all the instructions within it are written by Microsoft, so we've no choice in what it does or why.

3. Why is it necessary?

These are system files that V8 needs to run on any machine. Most the files should already be on every machine. The ones most likely to be absent are the MSXML 4.2 files -- which Microsoft designed to install in a different manner for XP than for any other operating system. Future operating systems will probably get the same instructions .

Sometimes after all this, Microstation still does not start. As a last resort delete the ustation.exe.Manifest in the Microstation directory.
