How to calculate the Effective Dia from Flange Analysis report in AutoPIPE?

Example:

Flange #1:

Flange #2:

Solution:

According to AutoPIPE help:

Effective Diameter

Enter the bolt effective diameter to be used in calculating the cross-sectional area of the bolts, Ab.  Ab is typically used in calculating the Gasket Seating Bolt Load, Wg.

Note: Whenever a dimension library is selected the program will use the bolt Thread Type to determine an effective diameter.  However, this field will remain editable at all times.

Remember that this filed is editable at all times, so one should be careful to confirm value displayed was correct. The program will post a warning for flanges sizes that are not in the library:

The Bolt Effective Diameter is not available in Flange/Bolt Dimension Library for Nominal Bolt Diameter of 1.625 inch with Coarse thread type.

From ASME Section VII, div-1, code definition, Ab is cross-section area of bolts using the root diameter of the thread or least diameter of unthreaded position, if less. The root diameter is not calculated, but looked up from a library table. Find FlangeDimLib.mdb in the AutoPIPE installation folder and open in MS Access or other appropriate application. Look at "BoltEffectiveDiameter" table, cross reference "Thread Type" and "BoltDiam" columns to find "RootDiam" value used on dialog and output reports.

Note: on the same table see source of information in the "Code" column.

Values match exactly with that highlighted above.
