What is the difference between Activities and Events?

Activities and Events are the two ways labour is defined in SYNCHRO Perform. Broadly speaking:

Refer to the Glossary of Terms and Data Model for further details

Activities

Activities are any jobs that need to be done to complete a project. For example, if the project is to build a high-rise tower, the first Activity may be to lay the concrete foundation, while the second Activity may be to install scaffolding, and so on.

Activities can also be grouped according to their Work Categories (such as 'Scope', 'Variation', etc.) in SYNCHRO Perform to reveal trends in the overall project.

Refer to Manage Activities for further information.

Events

Events are unplanned circumstances, such as equipment failure, bad weather, additional work requests and more.

An Event must be linked to an Activity, and can only link to one Activity. For example, if a project involves laying a concrete foundation, it may be delayed if the cement mixer does not arrive.

In this case, if the Activity is called 'Concrete Foundation', an Event called 'Project Delayed - Concrete Not Delivered' could be linked to it, with details of the delay in the Event.

(If there is no suitable related Activity for an Event, you can create an Activity called 'General Issues' to record such cases.)

Capturing Events improves the workflow for managing notices and claims, gives greater transparency regarding delays, and consolidates project information into a single source, among other benefits.

Like Activities, Events can also be grouped according to their Work Category, or their Event Type. Refer to Event Categories and Types for further information.
