Problem:
How do I prevent overusage of AutoPIPE products?
Solution:
Bentley's licensing philosophy is centered on ensuring that users are never deprived of access to software when it is needed. There is no setting that can be applied to limit usage but there are tools you can use to help manage usage. Understanding how usage is calculated and reviewing your trends will ultimately help with usage that may be exceeding your license pool.
Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices does not have instantaneous usage data and will not know who is presently using an application. But over time, Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices reports are an invaluable tool, enabling administrators to make more informed decisions.
Without a real-time connection between the licensed application and the license server, Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices will not cap usage. It will report those instances where usage exceeds license pools, but cannot be configured to limit the number of licenses of an application that are used. Even when license usage exceeds license pools, Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices will continue to provide licenses for that application. The fundamental reason for this is to guarantee that a user is never prevented from using a Bentley application when it is needed
Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices records daily usage on an hourly basis (by calendar hour):

- Each unique machine accessing a product within a calendar hour counts as 1 usage for that machine during that hour. (i.e., if 50 sessions of MicroStation were opened on one machine in the course of an hour, usage would be recorded as 1 for that machine)
- The total number of unique machines accessing a Bentley product within a calendar hour are recorded
- The hour with the most usage, per Bentley product, becomes the daily peak usage for that application
