How model a pressure relief valve in AutoPIPE?
Model the valve according to the geometry. With the case of the image above, model the valve using one if the procedures mentioned for an angle valve. Be sure to consider the weight and origntation of any actuator. Next to model the load cause by the actual sudden pressure release, suggest using one of the following approaches under AutoPIPE> Help> Workbook> Example Systems:
a. Water Hammer and simply change the fluid to as needed.
The relief thrust can be evaluated using API 520 equations or a copy of Liao's ASME paper on relief valves. TIH and THL files may be created by AutoPIPE assuming steam and then the TIH file is edited using a text editor and thrust value is changed.
b. Steam Relief (Time History) Example [Note: strictly for steam (Water vapor) relief ]
Otherwise, consider calculating a pressure thrust force that can be applied as a concentrated force assigned to a specific load case (EX. U1)
