Problem:

AutoPIPE's Support sub-report results indicate little to no displacement at a Support that has large gaps all around, WHY?

Also when I look at the animated displacement, it appears that the pipe is pivoting about the support with large gaps in all directions when it should not, why?

Solution:

Suggestion #1:

First answer this question, are you running a Linear Analysis or Non-linear analysis?

Answer:  From Online help:

"Linear: Perform linear analyses. Initial states are not needed. All gaps are assumed to be closed and friction is ignored for occasional load cases. Linear soil properties are used, and yielding of soil is not taken into account."

"Non-Linear: the non-linearities induced by defined support gaps, friction effects at a support bearing spring once a gap closes, and soil yield effects, are all considered.

Typical response, How do I confirm which type of analysis is being performed, linear or non-linear?

Answer: On the Analysis Set dialog screen (shone below) see the column for Non-Linear, is the box checked or unchecked (see online help for details on this feature) ?

Therefore confirm that a Non-linear analysis is being performed to consider the model's Gaps/Friction/Soil properties settings otherwise they will be ignored as mentioned above when performing a Linear analysis.

Suggestion #2:

Be sure that all of AutoPIPE's components and segments are not hidden, but turn ON. Hidden supports or hidden segments could revile pipe restraints that may not otherwise be visable, however are considered when performing an analysis.

AutoPIPE V8i 09.06.01.xx and lower:

a. Use View> Show all Components

b. On the Segment tab of the input grids, confirm all Segments are turned On by placing a check mark in the Show column (shown below)
