Override symbology for terrain issue 10.12

This bug has been reported to Bentley support and defect #820326 has been filed.

This defect only affects ORD version 10.12 but has been addressed with the new update of ORD 23 (23.00.00.129). This wiki will walk through the process on how to address the Override symbology issue temporarily until ODOT Updates to a newer version of ORD where this issue is fix.

Overview

This issue affects the terrain model when referenced to another dgn file. When referenced the Override symbology is not honored when selecting the Override Template. This can be seen within the image below.

Override Symbology Workflow

Once the Terrain model has been referenced to a basemap most user like to modify how the contours are displayed in there plan sheets. The following steps will walk you through that process while showing you how to fix the symbology being applied by the Override Template.

So first select the referenced terrain boundary which should be on level DT_X_Terrain_Ground_line then make this the active terrain using the context menu select the Set As Active Terrain Model.

After selecting the terrain boundary (DT_X_Terrain_Ground_Line) make sure you have the Properties dialog open. Then browse to the property Reference and select Yes within the dropdown field. In selecting Yes within the Reference property, the Override Template field will now appear, and a few other features are now made available to the user (Calculated Features Display and Source Features Display).

From here the user has the option to choose the override templates for this example lets select Terrain Model>X_Contours_10'_Major_2'_Minor. This is where the User will see the defect shown previously.

Solution

So, to fix the Override Template the user is going to have to manually modify the contour General properties under the Calculated Features properties.

The user should first click on the Calculated Feature navigate to Contours. You will then have two options that will need to be modified to match the ODOT CADD Standards. That being the Major Contours and Minor Contours.

Next select Major Contours calculated feature. Within the properties under General, TextStyle, and Contour Labels you'll notice that the level is set to Default along with Color, Line Style, and Weight are set to ByLevel. These need to be modified to match the ODOT CADD Standard.

When you go to change the level from Default to DT_X_Contour_Major you notice that even though the General Properties show the correct symbology in the design model they aren't following the symbology you just set.

For these contours to show correctly we need to manually set the Color, Line Style, and Weight by clicking on each option and filling those fields with the below information.

Once the General properties have been manually set the User will need to also set the TextStyle manually to the correct Annotation style ~X_Label – CenterCenter. When you select the correct TextStyle the field will still show the incorrect style, but it will be visually correct.

Unfortunately, the Contour Labels Text Level can't be modified to the correct level DT_X_Contour_Text because the software defect won't allow the new level change to stick. Meaning it will revert to Default.

Lastly the user will need to follow the same steps previously described for the Major Contours but for the Minor Contours while using the following information for the General property:

For the TextStyle use ~X_Label - CenterCenter

The result should look like the image to the right matching the ODOT CADD Standards.
