These two commands differ only in the fact that you have additional options in the Profile By Variable Slope From Element tool. Specifically, you can define a range instead of the entire element, and there are multiple methods of slope style rather than fixed slope alone.

In the Profile By Variable Slope From Element tool, the options for slope styles are:

• Constant - uses a constant fixed slope
• Linear - slope transitions between a start and end value using a linear method
• Reverse Biquadratic - slope transitions between a start and end value using a reverse biqudratic transition method
• Reverse Cubic - slope transitions between a start and end value using a reverse cubic transition method
• Extension - uses a secondary element in addition to the reference element to define the slope. This option calculates the slope between the reference element and the secondary element, and uses that slope to create the profile
