Question:

When our surveys get processed, a feature definition called Existing_Ground gets applied to the terrain. Our people in the hydraulics section want to see the contours displayed differently so I created a separate feature definition called Hydraulics for them. In order for them to use this new feature definition they have to make a static copy of the terrain file and apply the Hydraulics feature. I would rather that they not make a static copy but just reference the file that is available. Is there a way to override the feature definition of a terrain file that is referenced in to the current DGN?

Answer:

Yes, select the Terrain element in MicroStation, the select Element Information. In the Element Information dialog, turn ON Override Symbology at the bottom of the list, then select the desired Element Template in the "Template" drop down up in the "General" group.
