Question:

When attempting to create cross sections, there are no checkboxes available so that surfaces can be selected.

Answer:

The column that contains the checkboxes has simply been collapsed.  Place the cursor on the column heading to the left of "Object" and drag to expand the first column.

 

The most likely reason this column would become collapsed is due to changes to the Display settings.  In Control Panel > Display, if the display setting is "Medium", this problem will sometimes occur.  Try setting the display back to the default setting, "Smaller" to resolve the issue.
