Analytic Symbology - How do I define text size?

Area: Subsurface Utilities

Question:

I want to use Analytic Symbology to generate labels for my utility features.  How do I define the size?

Answer:

Note: Analytic Symbology View and Element Symbology tools in version 8.11.09.845 represents the beginnings of merger between the storm water technology of StormCAD and OpenRoads technology.  This is an area planned for enhancment in future versions.

See companion article for definition of font.

Analytic Symbology is toggled on in View Attributes and is only valid for use in 2D models.  First, toggle on the check box for Analytic Symbology.  Then in the drop-down lists choose whether you want to produce labels configured for SUE or for Hydraulic Analysis.  Then you can choose any preconfigured Symbology Definitions.

The Symbology Definitions are defined using Element Symbology manager (Subsurface Utilities > View > Element Symbology).

For any label definitions there is a multiplier which works as follows:

  1. There is an assumed final text size of 1.8 meters (ground meters, not plotted)
  2. So with a 1.0 multiplier your text size would be 1.8 meters which is not affected by DGN scale factors nor DGN Annotation Scale lock)
  3. For imperial units then the assumed base size is 1.8/0.3048 = 5.096 ft
  4. To obtain your desired text size then in the element symbology definitions use a multiplier whose value is:
    1. M =  Desired Size / 1.8 (for metric dgn)
    2. M = Desired Size / 5.9055 (for imperial dgn)

It is recommended that organizations make as much use as possible of the Hydraulic Seed capability and store these label definitions in the hydraulic seed so they are readily available.
