How do I control the growth of my SELECTserver license database?

 Product(s):SELECTserver
 Version(s):09.00.00.95 or later
 Environment:N/A
 Area:Installation / Configuration
 Subarea:SQL Management

The following support solution explains how to utilize the Data Retention feature in SELECTserver 09.xx.xx.xxx to control license database growth. The instructions only apply to users running a deployed (i.e. in-house) SELECTserver. They do not apply to users utilizing Bentley's hosted SELECTserver (also known as SELECTserver Online or Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices).

Background

By default, SELECTserver will store historical usage data indefinitely. This causes large license databases over time. Additionally, SQL Server Express 2005 imposes a size limitation of 4 GB, while SQL Server Express 2008 or later imposes a size limitation of 10 GB. Fortunately, SELECTserver 09.xx.xx.xxx introduced a Data Retention feature that culls old historical usage data beyond a specified duration.

Steps to Accomplish

To enable the Data Retention feature, perform the following steps:

  1. Open the SELECTserver administration site.
  2. Select Server Settings from the Administration drop-down menu along the top edge.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the Server Settings page, and locate the Data Retention section.
  4. Choose the radio button labeled "Remove usage data older than."
  5. Select a duration from the drop-down menu.
  6. Click the Apply button in the lower right corner to save changes.

Important: Versions prior to SELECTserver 09.01.00.26 possess a defect that can cause the Data Retention function to fail in certain cases. Either apply the following fix, or upgrade to the latest version of SELECTserver.
