Question:
When accessing several commands (Create Profile, Annotate Profile, Survey Fieldbook, etc.), a 'Windows Installer' window appears and states "Preparing to install..." yet it never installs and the process never finishes.

Answer:
This is an increasing issue with users who are working in a Window 10 OS. We believe there have been Windows updates from Microsoft which are inadvertently causing these issues with older InRoads versions. InRoads SS2 is not supported in Windows 10 as it was developed prior to the creation of Windows 10 and there are likely issues with the program running. Ultimately, there is nothing programmatically we can do but here are a few things we have tried with users with some success.
- You may be able to “cancel” the configuration and the program work without issue.
- Try running the program as an administrator. To do so, right-click on the icon and select “Run As Administrator”. This has popped up on a few users in the past that have been working in the product for quite some time. We don’t know what exactly has changed with Windows to cause it to need to configure commands which have been running and working for users for months prior to these messages appearing. You should be able to “cancel” the configuration and the program work just fine, so we don’t know if this is some change to the Windows installer trying to configure certain commands and options in the product.
- The next option is to go into the computer User Account Control Settings (UAC) and set it to ‘Never Notify’ so you do not get the message. This may be required in conjunction with running the program as an administrator.
- Another option is to have an administrator (not a user with admin rights, but an actual administrator) logged onto this machine and run the command so the configuration can occur.
This could be a problem with the Microsoft Installer on certain machines with a handful of users where certain parts of the program are not installing correctly or permissions preventing part of our program from installing and registering the components on the machine. We can try getting this base information and prerequisites back onto the machine if in fact Windows 10 updates are removing supporting/required files. Here are the next things we would suggest.
- Download and install this latest V8i Prerequisite Pack (08.11.09.03).
- Uninstall InRoads (using the instructions attached) and try to reinstall using the Setup.exe which is delivered in the ir081107615en folder. When you go to run this setup.exe, make sure you also run it as an Administrator.

- If that doesn’t work, you may try uninstalling and then try to install using the InRoadsGroup.msi under that same ir081107615en folder. Running the MSI may allow the installer to register installed information where the EXE will not.
- Other than trying to work with permissions and reinstalling, the next thing would be to reimage the user to see if it could be something with the user account.
