Error or Warning Message
When opening a product, an error appears that includes the following message:
Licensing service failed with error code -1
Explanation
The Bentley Licensing Service, a background process responsible for retrieving licenses on behalf of products using our Subscription Entitlement Service, is either not running or is not functioning properly.
How to Avoid
Please perform the following troubleshooting steps:
- Right-click on the Windows Start menu, and select Task Manager.
- Ensure Bentley.Licensing.Service for Windows (or Bentley.Licensing.Service.exe) is running.
- If Bentley.Licensing.Service is not running, open the Windows Start menu, and do a search for Bentley Licensing Tool. This component will attempt to start the Bentley Licensing Service.
- If Task Manager is showing the Bentley Licensing Service running, attempt to start your product now.
- If problems still persist, gather diagnostic logs, and contact licensing support for further assistance by either filing a service request or calling our support line and choosing option 3 followed by 1.
