The instructions and video below show how-to create mixed-case legend in OpenRoads SignCAD 2023.

Standards manuals refer to font sizes as 16/12, 13.33/10, 8/6 and similar designations for other sizes. The OpenRoads SignCAD TrueType font alphabets define the ascender to be the font size and the lower case letter to be ¾ the height of the ascender. The Highway fonts (B, C, D, E, E Mod, and F) in OpenRoads SignCAD have the lowercase letters built into the uppercase letter size. To use the Highway fonts according to the FHWA spacing in OpenRoads SignCAD, use the uppercase letter height for mixed-case legend and it will automatically set the correct lowercase letter height for you.  When a 16/12 size is specified, use the 16” font. Lower case letters will be nominally 12”.

NOTE: OpenRoads SignCAD will only show the uppercase text height in the dimensions for mixed-case legend. 

The FHWA has a web tool for calculating Standard Alphabet letter series (B, C, D, E, E Mod, and F) word lengths: FHWA Standard Alphabets Highway Sign Word Length Calculator - Knowledge - FHWA MUTCD (dot.gov). You can use this tool to verify word lengths and spacing on your sign legend in OpenRoads SignCAD.
