OpenRoads Designer is hanging when opening a DGN.
OpenRoads Designer a .NET Error when opening a DGN.
OpenRoads Designer throws an exception when opening a DGN.
Troubleshooting Path:
1. Try a different DGN file.
Select another DGN file in another folder or project and see if the same issue occurs.
It is important to see if other files are affected or if it is just one file or files in one project folder location.
2. Move the DGN file to another folder.
Move the DGN file that is crashing to a folder on your local computer such as C:\Temp\ and then try and open it.
This can help you find out if it is that particular dgn file or possibly a reference file or a relationship to an element in a reference file.
Alternatively, you can add -o to the target line off the application properties. See article for details: https://bentleysystems.service-now.com/community?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0019030
3. Try a different Workspace.
Launch the software from the icon or start menu and select "No Workspace" or one of the delivered workspaces that come with the product.
This will help determine if there is a configuration setting or possibly a file in the workspace that is being loaded that is causing the problem
4. Delete the User Preferences and User Temp folders. See this video.
5. Try a different user on the computer.
Log off the computer and log back on as another user, like an administrator, and see if the same crash occurs.
6. Try a different computer.
Log onto another computer and see if the same crash occurs.
7. Try opening the reference files.
There may be an issue with one of the reference files so try opening each of them to make sure they open.
Then move the reference files out of the folder one by one so that they can not be found and continue to open the dgn after you move each file and see if the crash goes away.
8. Try a clean uninstall\reinstall of the software.
9. Update your Connection Client to the latest version.

10. Update your video driver
There have been a few cases where the user updated to the latest video driver for their graphics card and that solved the issue.
11. Pull a backup of the file.
You would need to find a backup of the file prior to the issue happening. This is not ideal as you will more than likely loose work but it can get you going again.
12. Is Civil3D installed on the computer? There could be an issue with the object enablers causing the DGN file to crash.
Go to C:\Program Files\Autodesk and find the Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D 2024 Object Enabler 64 Bit folder and rename it by adding an underscore to the folder name. If you have more than one object enabler folder, then rename the other folders also.
Example: Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D 2024 Object Enabler 64 Bit_
NOTE: Renaming the Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D 2024 Object Enabler 64 Bit folder should not impact Civil3D. See Autodesk Civil 3D Help | Using the Autodesk Civil 3D Object Enabler | Autodesk.
13. Other items that may need to be checked.
Are you using a virtual machine?
Virus detection software? If disabled do you have the issue?
13. Ensure your machine is meeting the RAM hardware requirements. In support, we have seen issue resolved after upgrading the RAM from 16GB to the recommended 32G per the readme https://docs.bentley.com/LiveContent/
14. If you open the windows resource monitor and notice a spike in memory before the crash, try changing the preferred graphics processor, reboot your computer and attempt to open the dgn again.
