Problem

Why is the Relative toggle missing from the Place Active Cell tool in MicroStation CONNECT Edition?

Solution

This capability for cell placement is an old concept and is in relation to using level numbers in your DGN files rather than level names. Level numbers are something that was replaced as a concept when the V8 series and DGN file format was initially released. The previous V7 DGN format was rejigged so it did not need to rely on a limited amount of levels or naming of those levels. So it was decided to remove the "Relative" option, in the CONNECT Edition, from the Place Active Cell tool to limit the availability but not to stop this capability from being performed as it is still required if V7 DGN file format is in use.

To be able to use this option from MicroStation CONNECT Edition you will have to use the key-in that will still be available in future versions.

PLACE CELL RELATIVE

The following detail supplied in the V8i help documentation may assist in explaining why this toggle was originally used.

Relative

Point cells are always placed on the Active Level.

But if the active cell is a graphic cell and Relative is:

  • On — the Number of the level(s) on which elements in the graphic cell resided when the cell was created determine the level(s) on which the graphic cell is placed, as follows:

    • The graphic cell is placed on a level(s) relative to the Active Level's number. For example, consider a graphic cell that was created with elements on levels with the numbers 5, 7, and 8. If the Active Level's number is 1, the cell is placed on levels with the numbers 1, 3, and 4. If the Active Level's number is 45, the cell is placed on levels with the numbers 45, 47, and 48.

    • However, if the graphic cell has elements on any level whose number is not an attribute of a level in the DGN file, the placement operation fails.

  • Off — the Name of the level(s) on which elements in the graphic cell resided when the cell was created determine the level(s) on which the graphic cell is placed, as follows:

    • If the graphic cell elements reside on a level, and a level with the same name exists in the DGN file, the elements in the graphic cell on that level are placed on the corresponding level in the DGN file, even if the level settings are not the same.

    • If a level with the same name does not exist in the DGN file, the level is copied from the cell library into the DGN file. However, any elements in the graphic cell on the Default level in the cell library are placed on the Active Level.
