The default print settings used by the [[Plot Page(s)]] tool are loaded from the “promise” print style that is stored in the .dgnlib file used by the software. Changing the default print settings so they do not need to be tweaked for each print session is a matter of modifying this “promise” print style.
An overview of the process:
Determine the name and location of the DGNLIB file that contains the “promise” print style.
Open this DGNLIB file.
Make desired changes to the "promise" print style, then save the print style and DGNLIB file.
It is also possible to create a print style in a custom DGNLIB file instead of modifying the supplied “promise” print style. See [[Customizing the Interface]] for details on creating a custom DGNLIB file. While a custom DGNLIB file would keep customizations separate from the installed files, there is no way to export a print style, so the custom print style would have to be created from scratch. Therefore it may be better to simply modify the supplied DGNLIB file as described in this document when it comes to tweaking the default print settings.
This article also describes how to set the default print settings to be used with File > Print and [[Project Publisher - create PDF files of your projects|Project Publisher]].
Start Promis.e or Bentley Substation.
Select Workspace > Configuration from the main pull-down menus along the top of the application.
On the resulting Configuration dialog, find the MS_DGNLIBLIST variable and note the paths it contains.
From the following list, determine the file name appropriate for your version and look in the paths specified in the MS_DGNLIBLIST variable to find it. The file name itself might be specified in one of the MS_DGNLIBLIST paths. In that case, that is the appropriate file and path.
For Promis.e V8i Standalone (08.11.10.xx and higher): PowerPromise.dgnlib
For Bentley Substation V8i (08.11.12.xx) PowerSubstation.dgnlib
For promis.e V8i on MicroStation/PowerDraft V8i SELECTseries 1 or higher: promisev8iSR1.dgnlib
For promis.e V8i on MicroStation/PowerDraft V8i base release: promisev8i.dgnlib
Make a backup copy of this file.
In Promis.e or Bentley Substation, select File > Open.
On the resulting Open dialog, change Files of type" to "DGN Library Files (*.dgnlib)".
Clear the Open as read-only" check box.
Browse to and open the DGNLIB file as determined in the previous section. If a prompt appears that says the file is write-protected and asks if it should be opened as read-only, this will need to be remedied before proceeding. On some operating systems, the folder that contains the DGNLIB file is normally not writable by the user. Copy the file to an accessible path such as the Desktop folder and open it from there.
Select File > Print Organizer from the main pull-down menus.
On the Print Organizer dialog, select Tools > Define Print Styles. The Print Styles dialog should open with a print style named "promise" highlighted in the left pane.
Make the desired changes to the print style. Some fields may appear blank. Only modify the fields for which different behavior is desired (refer to current behavior, not visibility of settings or lack thereof on the print style dialog).
Click the Save icon and close Define Print Styles and Print Organizer.
Close Promis.e/Substation and elect to save the DGNLIB file. If the changes to this point have been made on a copy of the DGNLIB file made in the previous section, copy the modified DGNLIB file back to the original location and overwrite the original file (this may need to be done with modified folder permissions or by an Administrator).
Required: Restart the software and test the changes (changes to the DGNLIB file only take affect when the software is started).
It is also possible to create new print styles and copy existing print styles so that the user can select from multiple print styles when printing. It might be better to copy the "promise" print style to create a new print style instead of creating one from scratch.
The modified DGNLIB file can be copied to the corresponding folder on other workstations as means of distributing the customized default print settings.
This section applies only to versions prior to V8i SELECTseries 8 (08.11.13.xxx). In V8i SELECTseries 8 and higher, use [[Plot Page(s)]] instead of Project Publisher to print instead.
