How to use the Bentley Descartes tools within Bentley Substation?

Steps to Accomplish

The following process can also be adapted to use Bentley Descartes with Promis.e.

Install and configure

Download Bentley Descartes for MicroStation from the Fulfillment Center. Bentley Descartes for MicroStation is a different application than Bentley Descartes, which is a standalone application and a much larger download.
With Bentley Substation already installed, install Bentley Descartes for MicroStation.
Near the end of the installation process, choose to open the Bentley Descartes Platform Configuration dialog and finish the installation. Alternatively, after installation select Start > All Programs > Bentley > Bentley Descartes for MicroStation V8i > Bentley Descartes Platform Configuration.
Set the check box next to the desired application in which the Descartes tools should be available.
Click OK.

Start Bentley Substation with Descartes - Method 1

Right-click the shortcut used to start Bentley Substation and select Properties.
In the Target field on the Shortcut tab, append a space followed by -wudescartes to the end. The Target field should contain something similar to:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\Substation V8i\Substation\Substation.exe" "C:\ProgramData\Bentley\Substation V8i\Config\Ecad.dgn" -wudescartes
Double-clicking the modified shortcut will start Bentley Substation and Bentley Descartes, a splash screen should appear for each.

Bentley Descartes can be loaded on demand with the following key-in (Utilities > Key-in) within Bentley Substation:

Start Bentley Substation with Descartes - Method 3

This method will load Bentley Descartes when Bentley Substation is opened by opening a project page from ProjectWise Explorer. This method also works without ProjectWise integration.

Open the untitled.ucf file using a text editor such as Notepad. The untitled.ucf file is typically found in a path such as:
C:\ProgramData\Bentley\Substation V8i\WorkSpace\Users
Add the following line to the file: MS_DGNAPPS < DCARTES
Save and close the untitled.ucf file.

After performing the above procedure, any method used to open Bentley Substation will start Bentley Substation and Bentley Descartes. A splash screen should appear for each.

Tools

When Descartes is loaded, Tools > Raster will list "Descartes" sub-items

and Raster Manager will have a Tools menu and will list About Descartes V8i in a Help menu.
