Unrecognized Format
Error: Revit_0004
Error Message: The input file format is unsupported. Please confirm that the file in the connection is a file with an .rvt file extension and that it can be opened in a version of Revit that is supported by the Revit iModel Connector.
Issue:
The connector assigned to this file does not recognize the file format.
Cause:
The error may occur because the file is not a valid Revit file (.RVT), is corrupted or damaged, has been incorrectly renamed with a Revit extension, or is a different format (such as IFC or DWG) that is Revit-compatible but not natively supported by the connector.
Solution:
- Make sure the file has the correct .rvt file extension and was created with Autodesk Revit.
- Try opening the file directly in Autodesk Revit to confirm it is valid and not corrupted. If Revit cannot open the file, it may be damaged. The supported versions of Revit for the Revit iModel Connector are listed here: Supported File Formats - KB0098377
- If the file doesn’t open in Revit, attempt to recover it using Revit’s Audit feature:
-
- In Revit: File → Open → Check "Audit" before selecting the file → Open
- Test the synchronization process with another known-working Revit file to confirm whether the issue is specific to the original file.
- If possible, open the original file in Revit and re-save or export a fresh copy.
Error: Revit_0005, Revit_0006
Error Message:
Revit_0005: The input file looks damaged, please try to reload from its original location. Or it may contain some unsupported Revit data fields, please send it to Bentley support for investigation if possible.
Revit_0006: The Revit file appears to be corrupted. Please try to open it in Revit and re-save. Try to use the latest supported Revit version if re-saving didn't help.
Issue:
- Input Revit file Read Error.
Cause:
- The error may occur because the file is not a valid Revit file (.RVT), is corrupted or damaged, has been incorrectly renamed with a Revit extension, or is a different format (such as IFC or DWG) that is Revit-compatible but not natively supported by the Revit connector.
Solution:
- Make sure the file has the correct RVT extension and was created with a supported version Autodesk Revit. Please check the following KB Supported File Formats - KB0098377 to verify that the file has been saved in a supported version of the Revit Connector.
- Try opening the file directly in a supported version of Autodesk Revit to confirm it is valid and not corrupted. If Revit cannot open the file, it may be damaged.
- If the file doesn’t open in Revit, attempt to recover it using Revit’s Audit feature:

Error: Revit_0007, Revit_0009
Error message:
Revit_0007: The Revit file has been saved in an unsupported Revit version. Please upgrade the input file by saving it in a supported Revit version if it was last updated with an unsupported version of Revit.
Revit_0009: The input file has an obsolete format and its data may be imported incorrectly. Please upgrade the input file by saving it in newer supported Revit version and re-synchronize.
Issue:
- Input Revit file format not supported.
Cause:
- It could be due to an old Revit file before the Revit 2015 format or newer format not yet supported.
Solution:
The error may be caused by using a Revit file created in a version that is either too old (prior to the 2015 format) or too new to be supported by the current version of the connector. To resolve this, first check the file’s Revit version by opening it in Revit and verifying when it was last saved. If the file was created in an unsupported version, open it in a supported version of Revit, then re-save it to update the file format accordingly. If the file was created in a newer version not yet supported by the connector, consider saving it in an older, compatible version if possible. Additionally, confirm that the connector or plugin you are using supports the Revit version in question by checking its documentation or support resources. If the problem persists, we recommend contacting Bentley technical support and providing the file along with version details so they can assist further or advise on compatibility timelines. Error: Revit_0008
Error Message: Input file is not a Revit file. Please check the file for corruption or use another connector if the file is not a Revit file.
Issue:
- Input file is not a Revit file. Please check the file for corruption or use another connector if the file is not a Revit file.
Cause:
- It could be a corrupted Revit file or a different format file.
Solution:
Use the correct Revit file or use different connector if the file is not a Revit file.
Error: Revit_0038
Error Message: Input file is not a Revit file, but rather a ZIP archive.
Issue:
- The connector cannot process ZIP archives.
Cause:
- A ZIP archive was provided as the input file.
Solution:
- Note that if this Revit file was retrieved from Autodesk Construction Cloud, it may in fact be a zipped file that contains multiple Revit models even though the file extension is .rvt. This is described in the following article: https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Why-a-RVT-model-is-sometimes-downloaded-as-ZIP-from-BIM-360.html There are a couple of ways to check to see if this is the case once the file has been downloaded to your local disk.
- Open this .rvt file with a zipping program such as 7-zip and if you see that the file contains .rvt file(s).
- Try to open the .rvt file from your local disk with Revit, if it is a zipped file containing .rvt files, it will fail to open in Revit.
- If you have a zipped file with one or more Revit models, unzip the Revit files and use these for your iModel connection.
Unsupported
Error: Nwd_0006
Error Message: Input file (%s file format version) is not supported.
Issue:
The connector was unable to open the format.
Cause:
The Navisworks connector supports .nwd and .nwc formats, other formats like .nwf are not supported.
Solution:
Make sure that the Navisworks models that are part of the connection have been saved either as .nwd or .nwc formats and re-try the synchronization.
