Problem

I have exported flow direction arrows from WaterCAD / WaterGEMS as a shapefile and imported that into ArcMap / ArcGIS Pro, however flow arrow directions that are generated using the exported shapefile do not match with flow arrow directions in the water model.

Solution

Before exporting the flow direction arrows shapefile from pipe flex table, make sure that the angle unit is set to degrees in the options. Starting with WaterGEMS/WaterCAD 10.03.04.XX release the default unit for angle in these shapefiles should be in degrees, so you won’t need to change it.  

 

For ArcMap

Once the shapefiles are imported into ArcMap, make the following changes to the symbology.

• Right click on the flow direction shapefile and open properties
• Change the symbol from circle to triangle or arrows.

• Click on Advanced > Rotation in symbology tab itself, select the ANGLE field and change rotation style to arithmetic.
• This will align the flow direction arrows to that with water model.

 

For ArcGIS Pro

Once the shapefiles are imported into ArcGIS Pro, make the following changes to the symbology.

• Right click on the flow direction shapefile and open symbology
• On the “Primary Symbology” tab, click the symbol graphic, choose arrow symbol to be used

• Click on vary symbology by attribute > Rotation, select the ANGLE field and change rotation style to arithmetic.
• This will align the flow direction arrows to that with water model.

The final results should look like this for comparison.
