How to Backup and Restore a SQL Server Express Database
Explanation
The instructions below are for SQL Server Management Studio 2012. Please contact support if you do not have access to this. Steps in other versions of SQL Server Management Studio (ie 2008) may differ slightly but should still be applicable.
Process
Backing Up a Database
- Load up SQL Server Management Studio and login (Windows Authentication should do the job, otherwise use the password listed below or the one used when setting up the database), click the server name to expand the server tree.
USERNAME: sa
PASSWORD: Ho!eba5eS1BE!1
- Right click on the database that you wish to backup, select Tasks - Backup.
- The Backup database screen will then appear. By default, SQL Server will save the backup to a location on the local drive. To change this, click on the Remove button at the bottom, then Click on Add.
- Click on the browse button (...) and select a location to store the file, along with a filename, then click OK and OK again.
- Click on OK to save the backup.
- Repeat for the other 3 databases.
If an automatic backup routine is to be created, please consult Microsoft SQL Management Studio support for further assistance.
How to Restore a Database
- Load up SQL Server Management Studio and login (Windows Authentication should do the job, otherwise use the password listed above), click the server name to expand the server tree.
- Right click on the database that you wish to restore, select Tasks - Restore - Database.
- Change the radio button at the top to state 'Device' then click on the browse (...) button.
- Click on the Add button and browse through to your backup, select the file and save.
- The previous dialogue will then update, showing you information regarding the database. Just select OK.
- The database will then be restored. Repeat for the other 3 databases.
If you are restoring to a different database name, then change the name of the database listed under Destination to the required value, you would then need to browse through to the Files page and edit the 'Restore As' file path to match the new name of the database.
Also, ensure that the Database that you are restoring to is correct as in the screenshot below:
