CONNECTION Client / Bentley License Tool Landing Page

Applies To

  • CONNECTION Client 26.0.0.12
  • Bentley applications that require CONNECTION Client authentication

Issue

Users may report one or more of the following behaviors:

  • The sign in screen remains visible above other applications.
  • The sign in screen appears larger than expected and cannot be resized smaller.
  • Ending the CONNECTION Client process results in the sign in screen returning after a short time.

Cause

This behavior is Working as Designed (WAD).

When a Bentley application requires authentication, it calls CONNECTION Client. If the application continues to request authentication services, CONNECTION Client may relaunch even after the user closes the sign in screen. The development team has confirmed that the screen is designed as a MODAL window and is not intended to be resized below its default layout.

Note: If you do not use Bentley applications every day, you may prefer to prevent CONNECTION Client from starting automatically when Windows starts. This reduces background processes; CONNECTION Client will launch only when needed.

To disable auto-start:

  • Open Task Manager.
  • Select the Startup tab.
  • Locate Bentley CONNECTION Client and/or Bentley Licensing Service for Windows.
  • Right-click the entry and select Disable.

CONNECTION Client will still start normally when launched manually or when required by a Bentley application.

Please ensure that these settings are configured correctly in the CONNECTION Client settings.

To automatically set CONNECTION Client to log in and minimize:

Go to CONNECTION Client settings and check off the following two boxes -

Expected Behavior

The following behaviors are considered expected:

  • CONNECTION Client may reopen when requested by a Bentley application.
  • Closing the sign in screen does not prevent future authentication prompts if a product (eg: ProjectWise Drive) continues to call CONNECTION Client.
  • The sign in screen maintains its designed minimum size.
  • Stopping the CONNECTION Client process alone may not prevent it from restarting if another component requires it.

Resolution

No product defect has been identified.

If the sign in screen continues to appear:

  1. Determine which Bentley application is requesting CONNECTION Client authentication.
  2. Sign in to CONNECTION Client if authentication is required.
  3. if sign-in is not required, close the Bentley application that is triggering the authentication request.
  4. Verify whether the application is configured to launch automatically at startup. (Administrative review may be required.)

Because the behavior occurs when a product requests CONNECTION Client services, repeated prompting is expected until the requesting application no longer requires authentication.
