Zones should correspond to isolated distribution network areas of the system, surrounded by closed valves and where all inflows and outflows (if exist) must be measured. Zones can include for example DMA (District Metered Areas), pressure zones or operational zones. The zone polygons definition should match the zone net flow balance (the final balance between all inflows and outflows), where the net flow corresponds to the total water consumption and losses inside the zone. It is very important to assure the zone definition is correct as this will be used in WaterSight to potentially trigger events and calculate water balances and water losses.
As previously mentioned, it is very important to assure that the zones polygons defined and uploaded in the Admin >> GIS page matches the real definition of the inflows and outflow sensors. If needed, update/change the zone accordingly.
One task that can help defining zones balance (inflows and outflows) and therefore the zones polygons is through the creation of zones schemes, such as those represented below.
For the example above, the zones balance configuration would be the following:
In WaterSight, the zones balance would be configured in the Admin >> Zones page, as shown below:
Note that WaterSight supports an hierarchy structure (more information here), this means the definition of subzones inside bigger zones. This is done by filling parent column in the Admin >> Zones with the right zone name.
I have the system divided into several pressure zones, but not all have flow measurements. What should I do?
The concept of zones in WaterSight is used to calculate the water balances, for the alerting system and leak geolocation. And for this to work properly and results to be accurate, it is required that these zones are flow monitored. Therefore zones need to correspond to isolated distribution network areas of the system, surrounded by closed valves and where all inflows and outflows (if exist) must be measured, as explained above.
In this case you will need to redefine your zones boundaries to match the flow measurement points. Two different examples about how to define the WaterSight zones are show below:
