Coordinate Reference Systems in OpenGround

OpenGround supports comprehensive coordinate system functionality, allowing users to convert between Latitude/Longitude (Lat/Long) and Easting/Northing (E/N) formats. This guide explains how to import, view, and edit coordinate data using these features.

Background

Many global projects use a variety of coordinate systems. While data is often collected in Lat/Long format, some platforms such as Civil 3D and Quick Sections rely on E/N data. OpenGround enables seamless conversion between these formats to support diverse workflows.

Location Details Grid

The Location Details Grid displays both:

This dual-format support allows users to manage and view both coordinate types in one place.

Importing Coordinate Data

Coordinate Format Selection

During data import:

Example: Importing Lat/Long Data

  1. Prepare a CSV file with Lat/Long values.
  2. Use the import wizard to select Lat/Long as the coordinate format.
  3. OpenGround calculates and displays the corresponding E/N values after import.
  4. Locations are displayed on the map.

Lat/Long location coordinates chosen.

E/N values are now displayed and locations can be viewed on the map.

Editing Coordinate Data

Coordinate values can be edited directly in OpenGround.

4.1 Automatic Synchronization

Note:It is only possible to edit E/N or Lat/Long values and you will not be able to edit E and Long, N and Lat or E/N and Lat/Long at the same time. If attempted a validation error message will be displayed.

Latitude and Longitude Field Types

OpenGround includes two types of Lat/Long fields:

Field Type Description Conversion Supported
Latitude / Longitude String fields for text input (e.g., Degrees Minutes Seconds format) ❌ No
Latitude Decimal / Longitude Decimal Numeric fields for decimal values ✅ Yes

Important: Coordinate conversion only works with Decimal fields. If conversion isn’t functioning, check your configuration pack to ensure the correct headers are active.
