"Bentley.Licensing.Service for Windows has stopped working"

Background

The Bentley Licensing Service is responsible for communication between the CONNECTION Client (responsible for identifying the user) and the Bentley License Tool (responsible for fetching licenses on behalf of the user.

If the Bentley Licensing Service is not working correctly, the Bentley License Tool will not know the user, and therefore not be able to grant licensing to the user

CONNECTION Client requires a user with Administrator Role be logged in the system to install; Entering Administrator credentials is insufficient. If a user tries to install updates through the CONNECTION Client and that user does not have administrator rights to install, the installation will fail.

The "Bentley.Licensing.Service For Windows has stopped working" Error

Possible Cause

Local users that are not Administrators on their system get an Administrator to do the CONNECTION Client initial install or CONNECTION Client upgrades under their Administrator login.

An elevated instance of Bentley.Licensing.Service.exe from an administrator account (left over from the CONNECTION Client install) can intercept licensing traffic, preventing the end user's own Bentley Licensing Service (running under their user profile)  from working correctly.

 Verification / Resolution

Note that active user sessions will not persist thru a machine reboot, so if you have rebooted the machine, the issue license elsewhere, however rebooting a machine is not always feasable.

Open the Windows Task Manager (CTRL + Shift + ESC [Press and hold the CTRL, Shift, and ESC keys simultaneously, then let go of all three keys]).

Click on the "Users" tab, and note whether anyone other than the user is signed in, especially if the account is for an administrator. If so, log this user off.

Otherwise, go to the Details tab, and note whether any instances of Bentley.Licensing.Service.exe are running as someone other than the user.  If so, right click on the task and choose end the task for the other user if possible.
