How to turn off display of inactive topology?

Problem

In OpenRoads Designer a scenario with a physical alternative called "existing conditions" will have a different layout of nodes and links than the scenario with the physical alternative for "proposed conditions".  If both are displayed at the same time, it is a mess - really impossible to work with.  How does this work in OpenRoads Designer?  Elements can be set as either active or inactive in OpenRoads, but how does this affect their display?  Is there a way to turn off display of "inactive" elements?

Solution

There are several ways that you could achieve this:

  1. Use different feature definitions for the alternative layouts of nodes and links and then turn the given feature definitions on and off in the Explorer
  2. Attach an Item Type for the status to the elements, then use a Display Rule that overrides the symbology of the elements depending on the value in the Item Type
  3. In the 2025 release, use a Display Rule that overrides the symbology of the elements depending on the value in the Operational Status field in the Utility properties. See https://youtu.be/8u3iJ0ZoLnw?si=H7fCkSXe4etOkLMj

Of these, items 2 and 3 are probably better solutions, because there's only one feature definition, and - therefore - less maintenance.

Using Display Rules also means that you can turn off the display of the element, as well as overriding its symbology. Note though that you cannot change the level that the element is drawn on.
