Problem Description

Dgn File with 30 raster attachments crashes when opening file in MicroStation. This occurs on a Windows 7 64-bit machine. Not all of the raster images display and are hanging.

Steps to Resolve

1)    In Workspace > Preference > Raster Manager > General > Display Raster Using an Independent Process is not marked, try marking it and see if it makes a difference. If it is marked then try unchecking it. Usually there is a performance improvement when you uncheck Display Raster Using an Independent Process.

2)   Increasing the Limit Usage To percentage might help. We would suggest incrementing to 50% to see if that improves things, but not further than 70% to leave some room for other essential processes. This would depend upon how much memory you have in your workstation. It should be at least 25%, but set higher if you have enough memory.

3)    In Workspace > Preference > Memory try changing Raster Load Mode from Automatic to Standard.

By default Raster Manager creates the .CTIFF files in the same area as the temp area that is being used. We have seen issues where large file processing, which writes into the temp area, causes hangs. Try the following to see if it makes a difference. The folder that will be used can be whatever you chose to call it and can be created on another disk drive if it has more free space on it.

Doing steps 1-3 about 55% of the raster images would display and then it would hang. Changing .ctiff cache file creation to be done in a folder that is not under C:\Documents and Settings in Windows XP and C:\Users (temp area) resolved the hang problem when raster images are attached.

• Create a folder (for example C:\RasterCache)

• Workspace > Configuration

• New

• Variable:

• MS_RASTER_CFILE_FOLDER

• New Value:

• Enter the directory path that you created

• For example: C:\RasterCache\

• (Note: make sure you enter the "\" at the end) 

After the Environment Variable has been defined exit MicroStation and then open your design file again in MicroStation. 

If you do not define the environment variable MS_RASTER_CFILE_FOLDER to a different folder it will create your .CTIFF cache files in the temp area.  If your raster images do not display when you open your design file in MicroStation then do:

1)   Raster Manager > Settings > Cache Manager make note of the Current Location.   

2)   Exit MicroStation

3)   In Windows Explorer go the Current Location that showed in Cache Manager

4)   Do a search for files ending with the file extension .CTIFF

5)   Delete the files with the file extension .CTIFF file

6)   Open your design file in MicroStation

7)   Raster images may be slow to display because they are recreating the .CTIFF (cache) files
