Background

Text fields are platform functionality that can be used to display information from various sources (see the articles listed in the See Also section) on drawings.  This article describes steps to be taken to ensure that the information displayed stays up-to-date when the source data changes.

Steps to Accomplish

The following process should be performed on any existing drawing  where text fields are used. Also consider performing the procedure on the seed file(s) to make subsequently created drawings update fields automatically.  If the following process is not done, the text fields on the drawing will only update manually (Tools > Text > Update All Fields).

Set the "Update Fields Automatically" option

1. Open the existing drawing, project page, or seed file as the case may be.
2. Click the Models button on the Primary Tools tool box.
   
   
   
3. On the resulting Models dialog, right-click the DGN file in the list and select Properties.
   
4. On the resulting Model Properties dialog, set the Update Fields Automatically check box.
   
5. Click OK.
6. Save the file.

Determine which seed file(s) to modify

Promis.e and Bentley Substation

1. Select [[Options]] > Project Options > Standards > Grid/Snap Settings.
   For versions prior to SELECTseries 7, select [[Options]] > Project Options > Default Grid & Snap Settings.
2. Note the files specified in the "Seed File" column for the modes in which the file name field is to be used. The seed files are typically located in
   \[[promis-e Data folder|promis-e Data]]\Templates\Page\
   \[[Substation Data folder|Substation Data]]\Templates\Page\

Bentley Raceway and Cable Management

The seed files are typically located in the "seed" subfolder in the dataset.
